Puteri Gunung Ledang
According to legend, there lived a beautiful princess name Puteri Gunung Ledang who lived in the high mountains of Gunung Ledang, which is the highest mountain in south Peninsular Malaysia. It was told that the princess had magnificent beauty and magical powers and this news spreaded to Sultan Mansur Shah.
One day, when the great Sultan Mansur Shah was having meeting with his ministers, he declared, “I wish to have a wife that will surpassed the wife of other princes and kings.”
“O Great King, you already had two wives from powerful empires, Princess of China and Princess of Jawa. Aren’t they the most powerful empires” the Bendahara, Tun Perak reminded. But the Sultan was stubborn and said, “For one king to marry the daughter of other king, even other Rajas do that. What I desired is to have a wife that no other Rajas could have. I desired to ask for the hand of the fairy princess —Puteri Gunung Ledang.
Sultan Mansur Shah immediately dispatched his trusted warrior, Hang Tuah who is already old, along with other captains to Gunung Ledang. They are Sang Setia and Tun Mamat.
As they were climbing Gunung Ledang, a strong wind struck them that would climb no further, especially the elderly Hang Tuah. They found a cave nearby and went there to rest and protect themselves from the violent strong wind.
“ Hang Tuah, why don’t you and others stay here. I will lead three of our men to continue the journey,” bade Tun Mamat.
“Do whatever that is must as long as we deliver the wishes of our Sultan,” said Hang Tuah.
So Tun Mamat along with his men continued the journey. As they climbed further and passed thickets of singing bamboos, they finally reached a point where the clouds are so close that they could reach it.
It was then Tun Mamat came upon a beautiful enchanted garden, where he saw four women knitting. He told them his quest to find Puteri Gunung Ledang and present the Sultan’s marriage proposal. One of the women, Dang Raya Rani stood up before him and said, “I’m the guardian of her Royal Highness Puteri Gunung Ledang, her Royal Highness shall hear the Sultan’s wish”. After saying this, all the women vanished into thin air. Tun Mamat was surprised, but then he remembered, the place was enchanted after all. So Tun Mamat waited at the garden for the princess reply.
Later that night, an old woman, bent double with age came to Tun Mamat. “ Young man, her Royal Highness said that if the Sultan desires her, let him build her
a bridge of gold and a bridge of silver from Melaka to Gunung Ledang.”
“and for the betrothal gift, let there be seven trays of mosquito hearts, seven trays of the hearts of mites; a vat of water from dried areca nuts; a vat of the tears of virgin maidens; a cup of the Sultan’s blood; and a cup of his son’s blood.
Later, Tun Mamat, Hang Tuah, Sang Setia and their men return to Malacca. When Tun Mamat presented the conditions of Puteri Gunung Ledangs betrothal gifts to the Sultan, his heart sank. The humbled Sultan said, “all that she demands, we can provide, save only the blood of our son; that we cannot provide, for our hearts would not suffer us to take it.”
